Saliara, Marble beach on Thassos

I still don’t know what Saliara means. Probably it has something with greek slang. In rental agency some Greek said to young couple, “ok but I must warn you, don’t go with scooter to Saliara”.

Uh forbidden fruit, it must be good we thought.

I can’t say the problem is to get there, as some people might tell you. You need to drive a same dirty road that is used by trucks from marble mine. When you meet a full truck going the other way, of course it could get you into trouble. And as I said, in rental agencies seller will warn you about that. In addition they will probably not allow you to drive down to the beach, and if you do, in case of any damage on the car your insurace will be rejected.

You can easily walk to the beach.

How to get there?

Find on the map Makryammos resort. Follow that road until you come to the resort entrance. The entrance is labeled on the left side, and from there notice a dirty road that curves to the right.

That’s a way to Saliara. It takes about 25 minutes to arrive to the beach. As long as you see a marble rock in the distance, you’re on the right way. That rock is marble mine, and like name says, Marble beach is located below.

Saliara-marble beach, Thassos

When we first time went to Saliara it rained. It was our last day on Thassos, and till that day we didn’t think about this place as something special, and that’s a reason we haven’t visited before.Beach is beach, right?

But after we spent two hours sitting and chilling and playing all alone with strong waves , what can I say than I would strongly recommend anyone planning to visit Thassos- go there and enjoy.

Face of the beach has changed last year. I must say unfortunately.

Now, Saliara is paying price of popularity, and during season you can buy a drink at the bar on the beach of even rent sunbeds. Although many tourists do like this option I think it violates beauty and charm that beach once had. It makes me sad, because I will always feel this place as we enjoyed it first time-peaceful and beautiful.

Another beach is located near Saliara. Its name is Vati beach and to get there just follow the road straight forward. You will see almost similar bay, and it provides great alternative if Saliara is over crowded.
