Giola, indescribable place of nature on Thassos

What is Giola? I cannot say it’s a beach, but this extraoridinary piece of nature is must see if you’re on Thassos. Don’t miss oportunity to visit Giola because you probably haven’t seen anything like this

The biggest problem is how to get there.

The asphalt road is a few kilometers away, so walking is the best way to reach Giola. Unfortunately, many maps on the island don’t even have Giola depicted, and without instructions it’s hard to understand where is located.

Ok, lets go>> From Potos, follow the main road to south. After a few kilometers you will pass through a village called Astris. On a really sharp bend to the left is hotel Aeria. From here slow down because after 300-400 meters you need to find a green table with “Sirines” caption (in Greece). Say goodbye to asphalt and turn to the right.

The road goes steep down, and this section you can still drive. Nothing you will see here except olive yards, goats and rocks:) This road ends at crossing just fifty meters from the sea. If you look at the hill on the right you can see hundreds of stairs leading down from Aeria hotel to the beach, and that is a good indication you’re on the right place.

On the left side notice a dirty road that climbs to the hill. That’s a way you need to follow. I think Its a good decision to park your car here, otherwise you could have problems with rocks, and most probably damage your car. Take a breath, and start your adventure.

You will start a nice ascent passing many olive yards and sheepfolds. After a ten minutes walk you’ll notice a first graphites with an arrows pointing you to Giola. Follow them, and don’t worry. At the hill top is located abandoned stone-work barn, and from there walk gently to the right. The road ends here, and prepare your legs for steepy downhill to the sea.

Interesting thing is that you cannot see Giola until you almost reach it, so in one moment we thought, all the graphites are fake :)

I m always worried about snakes, to be honest we haven’t seen them, but bushes on the way down looked scary for me:). You never know who lives in those green plants.

This slope is the hardest part of your journey to this spectacular sight. If you taking children please, keep an eye on them. Just be careful, and don’t let them to run or to fool around.

Almost there....and voila! Giola is beneath! Now you see, all your efforts were worth it. The water inside is like a jewelry. You can swim, jump from the rocks, or anything you like. I must warn you, be careful when walking around the pool edge.

The waves are sometimes so strong that you might fall and get hurt. Remember, it’s an open sea, and keep in mind water is unpredictable. All in all it could be one of yours more exciting days on Thassos.
