How much holiday on Thassos costs?
Here I ll try to give you some essential tips about prices on Thassos so you can easily calculate how much money you’re gonna need. If you haven’t been in Greece before, this country is somewhere in the middle when speaking about prices.
The biggest expense is always accomodation. You can choose between hotels and studios. What makes studios so popular in Greece among youngers and couples is price. I tell people that prices for studios are around 20-30e. It’s a fair price but differs from month to month. If you planning trip during peak season probably you will pay more. Keep in mind that always good idea is to book in advance, and that way you will get studio much cheaper.
Hotels are good option if you’re coming with children, or if you want to enjoy vacation and don’t think about anything.
Eating and food is one of most important aspects of traveling. You have several options available. Staying at hotel is good because you have food included. If you rent a studio you have kitchen with all necesary dishes, and like at hostel you’re free to cook food you like. I agree it does take some time, you’re came to enjoy and not to cook, but if we want to save some money, studio gives us that option.
Eating out at restaurants is on must do list when you’re on Thassos. Here, locals are real masters in cooking. Food is delicious, and even if you do not like heavy meals, Greek food is awesome and you must try it.
Prices are reasonable.
1kg of goat meat is from 18 euros. (you must taste it, and half portion is enough for two average and hungry adults)
Salads are from 2.5-3 euros
Mythos beer is from 1.5 euros etc.
Many restaurants are located near beaches, but here I m going to tell you a little secret. In Greece you should always look for a restaurants that serve traditional food, and places where greeks are going to eat. On Thassos the best food is in villages Theologos and Kazaviti. Of course you don’t have to avoid others, I m just pointing out that real traditional food is not on the beach.
Street food-Gyros is our prefered choice often for breakfast, or after beach. It’s tastefull and cheap meal. For about 2 or 2.5 euros you have nice and fast food that will give you enough energy for all day swimming :) I can eat Gyros almost always and three times a day. Gyros is not only food that you can buy on the streets, also try Souvlaki, Greek Salad...etc.
Groceries-Thassos still doesn’t have big market, so wherever you are located, grocery prices are pretty much the same. One day you can buy oranges in one store cheaper than others, but tommorow the cheapest would be some other store.
Juices are from 0.7-3 euros
A beer can you can find for less than 1 euro
Feta cheese is from 7 or 8 euros per kg
Six eggs pack is 1.20 euros
Tost bread costs from 2 euros
Bottled water (6*1.5l) is nearly 1.2 euros
Rent a car on the island -You’re going to need a rent a car on Thassos. There is also public transporation available (ticket is around 1 euro), but for any island, your own vehicle is always better idea.
Smaller cars are from 25 euros per day. During july and avgust it is hard to rent good and reliable car, and like accomodation you should book in advance.
Scooter is also an option, and if you choose this way of transportation you will save a lot of money. Driving scooter instead of car is cheaper because scooters use significantly less fuel on average. The smaller models (50cc) have estimated fuel consumption of 2-3 liters per 100km. Scooters are cheap to rent. Usually prices are from 8-15 euros per day. More days you take the less you pay per day. One money saving tip here is - always negotiate about price.
Prices for fuel are unstable and I can’t tell you precisely how much unleaded costs. Two years ago price per liter was about 1.40 euros, and last year it was almost 1.70 euros.
